Why Frozen Water Lines Burst and Frozen Sewer Lines Do Not

Two pipes leave your house and run under the same yard, through the same frost, in the same cold. In a hard January one of them can split open and flood a basement. The other almost never does.

That is not luck, and it is not because one pipe is built better. It comes down to whether the pipe is full.

Why a water line bursts

Your water service is pressurised and it is full, end to end, all the time. There is no air in it and nowhere for anything to move.

When that pipe starts to freeze, the ice takes up more room than the water did. In a pipe that already has no spare room, that expansion has nothing to push into. So it pushes on the pipe wall instead, and it keeps pushing until something gives.

That is the whole mechanism. The pipe does not fail because ice is sharp or because the cold weakens the material. It fails because a sealed pipe full of water has no way to relieve the pressure.

Worth knowing: the split often is not where the ice formed. Pressure travels through the water still in the line, so a freeze near the street can burst a fitting inside the house. And you frequently do not find out until it thaws, because while it is frozen the ice plug is holding the water back.

Why a sewer line does not

A sewer line is the opposite of a water line in the two ways that matter here.

It is open at both ends. Nothing in it is under pressure and it is not full. When freezing starts, it works its way along the pipe, and any pressure it creates simply pushes down the open pipe in either direction. There is somewhere for it to go, so it goes there instead of into the pipe wall.

It makes its own heat. Waste moving down a sewer line is warm to start with, and the material breaking down inside the line generates heat of its own. A sewer in normal use is being warmed from the inside every time somebody runs a tap.

Put those together and a sewer line in a lived-in house is a difficult thing to freeze.

When a sewer line does freeze

It happens, and there is a pattern to it.

The house is empty. Somebody is in Arizona for six weeks and nobody is running water. No waste is moving, so none of that heat is being produced. What is still moving is a thin trickle of condensate from a high-efficiency furnace or boiler, which runs down the line slowly and cold.

That is the recipe. Not much water, moving slowly, with nothing warming the pipe. We see it most often in vacation stretches and rentals sitting empty over winter.

The fix is usually straightforward. A hot water jetter down the cleanout opens it back up. Because the pipe has not burst, there is generally nothing to repair afterward.

If you are leaving a house empty through a Northland winter, running water occasionally does more good than people expect. It is not about keeping the water line moving, it is about putting warm waste down the sewer.

Material changes the outcome

Once you understand that bursting is about having nowhere for the expansion to go, the material question answers itself.

Copper and galvanized steel do not give. They are rigid. When the ice needs room and the pipe will not yield, the pipe splits. Most burst water services we replace are one of these two.

HDPE gives. The polyethylene used in modern water services can stretch and take some deformation, so a freeze that would split a copper line can leave an HDPE line intact. It is the main reason it has become the standard for water service replacement, and it is what we pull in on water line replacement work.

The trade-off nobody mentions

HDPE surviving the freeze is not the whole story, and this is the part homeowners never hear until they are living it.

A frozen copper or galvanized line can be thawed electrically. Because metal conducts, you can clamp onto it at two points, much like a welder, and run current through the pipe until the ice lets go. It is a known procedure and it is quick.

You cannot do that with HDPE. It does not conduct, so there is no current to run. Thawing one means disconnecting the line inside the house, closing the curb stop, and working a small hot water jetter down it. That is a process rather than a quick call.

This is why some towns near us take the position they do. Hermantown permits copper for water services, and the ability to thaw a line in February is a large part of the reasoning. It is a genuine trade: a material that resists bursting but is harder to recover, against a material that bursts more readily but can be thawed in an afternoon.

Neither answer is wrong. It depends on whether you are optimising for the freeze not damaging the pipe or for getting water back on quickly when it does freeze.

If yours is frozen right now

A few things worth knowing before anyone starts thawing anything:

  • Find out what the pipe is first. Electrical thawing on a metal line is routine. On plastic it does nothing, and guessing wastes a service call.
  • An open faucet is your pressure relief. If a line is partly frozen, leaving a tap open gives expanding ice somewhere to push and can be the difference between a thaw and a burst.
  • Expect the leak at the thaw. If the pipe already split, the ice is what is holding the water. Know where your shutoff is before it lets go.
  • A repeat freeze is a depth problem. A line that freezes two winters running is telling you it is not deep enough, and thawing it every January is treating the symptom.

The real fix is the installation

Everything above is about surviving a freeze. Not freezing in the first place comes down to how the line was put in the ground: how deep it sits, and what is above it if it could not go deep enough.
