Most homes in Duluth and Superior were built long before PVC pipe existed. If your home was built before 1980, the sewer line underneath it is almost certainly made from a material that is no longer installed anywhere. In many cases, it has already outlived the lifespan it was designed for.
What people usually want to know is how long their sewer line should last. The honest answer depends entirely on what the pipe is made from. Here is a breakdown by material, with specific context for homes in the Duluth and Superior area.

If your home was built before 1970, there is a strong chance your sewer pipe has already outlived its intended service life, whether or not you have noticed any problems yet.
Clay Pipe (Also Called Terracotta)
Clay was the standard for residential sewer lines from the late 1800s through the 1960s. If your Duluth home was built before 1965 in a neighborhood like Congdon, Lakeside, the Hillside, the East End, or Morgan Park, there is a good chance clay tile is what is in the ground.
The expected lifespan of clay sewer pipe is 50 to 60 years. A home built in 1945 with the original clay line reached that mark in 2005. Those pipes have now been in the ground for 80 years or more.
Clay pipe does not fail all at once. It tends to degrade gradually, which is why a sewer camera inspection is the most useful first step for any older home. Here is what typically causes clay to fail:
Root intrusion. Clay sewer pipe is made from individual sections joined end to end rather than a continuous run. Every joint is a gap, and tree roots are very good at finding gaps. Once roots get inside, they grow and crack the surrounding pipe over time. This is one of the most common things we find in older Duluth neighborhoods.
Freeze-thaw movement. The ground in Duluth and Superior shifts seasonally, and rigid clay sections shift with it. Joint separation and hairline cracking are common in areas with heavy tree coverage or in hillside neighborhoods where soil movement is more pronounced.
Interior scaling. The rough interior surface of clay pipe collects grease, tissue, and organic debris. Clogs become more frequent as the pipe ages, and clearing them aggressively can cause additional cracking in a pipe that is already fragile.
When we run a camera through a clay line with moderate root intrusion and intact pipe walls, sewer pipe lining (CIPP) is often the right path. It restores the pipe from the inside without excavating. When the damage is more advanced, joint separation is significant, or sections have cracked through, replacement becomes the more practical option.
Cast Iron Pipe
Cast iron replaced clay in many areas and was the dominant material from roughly the 1920s through the early 1980s. Most municipalities phased it out by the mid-1970s. In Duluth, Superior, and the surrounding communities, we still regularly find cast iron lines beneath homes built through that period, both in the underground run and beneath the house itself connecting to the main stack.
Cast iron carries an expected lifespan of 50 to 60 years, though internal corrosion often causes failure before that point. Wastewater is acidic, and that acidity works on the interior walls of cast iron over time. The pipe rusts from the inside out. What begins as a rough, corroded surface becomes pitting, then cracking, then collapse.
When we run a camera through a cast iron line and find the interior walls still have reasonable condition, lining is often a viable option. When corrosion has progressed significantly, or when the pipe has cracked or collapsed in sections, pipe bursting is the right path. Pipe bursting pulls a new PVC line through the footprint of the old one without excavating the full run.
Cast iron is also common beneath older homes where it transitions to the interior drain system. A camera inspection will show the condition of both the underground section and the pipe near the cleanout, so you have the full picture before deciding on next steps.
Orangeburg Pipe
Orangeburg is the most problematic material you can find in a sewer line, and the one that surprises homeowners the most when we show them the camera footage.
It was manufactured from layers of paper pulp and coal tar, pressed into pipe form, and installed from roughly 1945 through the early 1970s as a low-cost alternative to cast iron during and after World War II. It was cheap, lightweight, and easy to handle. It was also a poor long-term choice that failed far sooner than its intended lifespan.
In the Duluth and Superior area, homes built between 1945 and 1965 have the highest likelihood of Orangeburg. Superior in particular saw heavy residential development during this window, and Orangeburg was common in that build period. The material was supposed to last up to 50 years. In practice, Orangeburg frequently softens and deforms in 25 to 30 years because it absorbs groundwater moisture. A pipe that should be round slowly becomes oval and then flattened. Once it collapses, it backs up completely.
If a camera inspection finds Orangeburg that still holds its round shape, pipe lining may stabilize the line and extend its service life. If deformation has begun, full replacement is the only practical path. Pipe bursting is typically the most efficient solution because it replaces the entire failed run with new PVC in a single pass without digging up the full length.
If your home was built between 1945 and 1965 and you have never had a camera inspection, it is worth scheduling one. Orangeburg tends to fail without much warning, and catching it while lining is still an option is significantly less disruptive and expensive than addressing a collapsed line.
Schedule 40 PVC
PVC became the industry standard in the early 1980s because it solves the problems that came with every previous material. It does not rust, it does not absorb moisture, tree roots cannot penetrate properly sealed joints, and the smooth interior walls resist buildup and blockage. Expected lifespan is 75 to 100 years or more.
If your home was built after 1985, you almost certainly have PVC. If your home was built between 1975 and 1985, you may have either PVC or one of the older materials depending on the contractor and what was available at the time. A camera inspection is the only way to confirm what you have.
Signs Your Sewer Line Needs Attention
Lifespan estimates are averages. Individual pipes fail sooner or later depending on soil conditions, tree coverage, usage patterns, and how well the original installation held up. Watch for these signs regardless of what material you have:
- Slow drains throughout the house rather than at a single fixture
- Gurgling sounds in toilets or other drains when fixtures in a different part of the house run
- Sewage smell in the yard, near the cleanout access, or in the basement
- Wet patches in the lawn with no obvious water source
- Sewer backups that clear temporarily and return within days or weeks

What We Typically Find and Recommend
Once we have the camera footage, the repair path depends on what we find:
- Sewer pipe lining (CIPP) for lines with cracks, root intrusion, or joint separation that still have enough structural integrity to support a liner. Clay and cast iron lines in reasonably good condition are often candidates. Single-day installation with no major excavation.
- Pipe bursting for lines that need full replacement, including most Orangeburg situations and advanced cast iron deterioration. New PVC is pulled through the footprint of the old line trenchlessly.
- Point repair for a single isolated defect in a line that is otherwise in serviceable condition.
