Contour Inc. site preparation work in Duluth MN
Site prep contractor — Duluth and Superior

Everything built above ground starts with what we do below it.

Urban sites do not forgive poor planning. We walk every lot before equipment arrives, going through grade, drainage, and what every trade coming behind us will need. Josh and Brian both come from foundation work, which means we plan from the foundation up, not just the dirt out.

We work in Duluth, Superior, Proctor, Two Harbors, Hermantown, Ashland, and Cloquet. Bonded and licensed in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Same crew on every job from first cut to final grade.

How it works

Our site prep process

Every job follows the same sequence. Nothing gets skipped.

01

Pre-job site visit

We meet with the foundation contractor on site before any equipment is scheduled. Grade, drainage, and trade sequencing are all walked through together.

02

Grade and drainage assessment

We assess the existing grade and identify where water moves on the lot. Drainage planning happens before the first bucket of dirt moves.

03

Rough grading and lot clearing

The lot is graded to rough plan, clearing debris, vegetation, and anything that would interfere with the foundation work.

04

Utility coordination

We coordinate with utility locates and handle rough utility prep so the foundation crew is not waiting on conflicts.

05

Fine grade and handoff

We bring the site to finished grade and walk through the handoff with the foundation crew. They get what they need, when they need it.

Common questions

Site Prep FAQs

What does site preparation for new construction include?

Site prep includes rough and fine grading, drainage planning, utility coordination, and getting the lot ready for the foundation crew. We also do the pre-job walkthrough with your foundation contractor so nothing is missed before we start.

Do you coordinate directly with my foundation contractor?

Yes. That is part of how we work. We require a pre-job site visit with the foundation contractor before any equipment is scheduled. Grade, drainage, and trade sequencing are all worked out together before a machine moves.

How long does site prep take before the foundation crew can start?

It depends on the lot size and conditions. Most residential site prep jobs in Duluth and Superior take one to three days. We can give you a more accurate timeline after a site visit.

Are permits required for site preparation in Duluth?

Permits are required for some site work, especially if it involves utility connections or grading changes near stormwater systems. We pull the permits and handle city coordination so you do not have to.

Do you serve Proctor, Hermantown, and Two Harbors?

Yes. We work throughout Duluth, Superior, Proctor, Hermantown, Two Harbors, Ashland, and Cloquet. Bonded and licensed in both Minnesota and Wisconsin.

How we approach every new build

Why we always meet with the foundation crew before a machine moves.

After ten-plus years of combined foundation and excavation work, Josh and Brian kept seeing the same pattern: when a site prep project goes wrong, it traces back to poor communication before the first machine moved.

Drainage, soil conditions, and grade are not details you assess from a plan. A plan is a starting point. The ground is the reality.

We do a pre-job site visit on every new construction project. We walk the lot, talk through drainage, and make sure every contractor coming in after us knows exactly what they are building on.
